Basically, all the other links in the assignment don’t work on my laptop. Howbeit, I will try to finish this assignment with just the philseflsupport.com link.
Five theories of the history of language methodology
Grammar translation
This method forms the basis of many English teaching courses, around the world. IPA (international Phonetics Association) and the attitude towards Grammar improved this method, in order to be the basic of the English teaching course, as it was criticized as being an out dated method.
This method focuses on the teaching of Grammar rules. These rules were memorised. This also included lists about sentence structures and vocabulary. There are still some problems regarding the history of the language and the rules they had abided rules.
Audio lingual & structural situational
This method took over the Grammar translation method, when it was criticized. This teaching method is mostly focused on talking. The language could be broken down into lists of structural patterns. However, these methods were drilled in the students and punishment awaits those that
Cognitive code
Within this method, the rules of languages are structurally linked together. These are rules, which can generate any sentence from a universally common structure and each language may use different forms to get to the sentence structure that is correct. This means that they wanted the students to learn through meaningful practice activities and creativities. This was an attack on behaviorism, they wanted to show that learning through thinking and effort would give the student better results.
Communicative language
This method was focused from a point of view of the students, instead of the teachers. The students learn by communicating. They would basically learn from each other and their environment. Style and register became increasingly important for this method.
Lexical re-emergence & learner independence
The definition of lexical is the vocabulary and grammatical structures you know.
The main focus is vocab. This method helped the students to learn better and gain a broader range of interest. Due to the language having different ways to be taught (structure is taught in one way [cramming]), whereas rules are learned through their mental capabilities. It resulted into the student having to do self study as well.
